Jonny Miller: When Mindfulness Numbs

Jonny Miller says meditation can mask hard feelings — he teaches spotting where emotions are held in the body and runs a five‑week cohort from 5 Oct–6 Nov.

Jonny Miller, founder of Nervous System Mastery, says the mindfulness toolbox many of us use to cope with stress can quietly become a way of avoiding feelings rather than facing them. That matters because unprocessed emotion, he argues, is a major contributor to long‑running fatigue, numbness and low motivation.

What Miller sees going wrong

Meditation, breathing work and yoga are powerful tools for short‑term relief. But used without awareness they can serve as a form of emotional buffering: a way to "self‑regulate away your emotions" so they never get fully processed. Miller warns this habitual buffering can lead to pockets of held‑on tension and a persistent low capacity for coping.

"I love meditation, and I think it’s an incredibly powerful, valuable practice," — Jonny Miller

He points out that animals naturally discharge a stress response after danger; humans have largely lost that instinctive reset. Instead we clamp down — a physical tightening Miller calls "clenching" — and that resistance keeps a feeling alive far longer than the emotion itself.

How his approach differs

Miller builds practice around three progressive skills:

  • Interoception — learning to notice internal bodily signals in real time.
  • Self‑regulation — using body‑first, bottom‑up tools such as paced breathing to shift state, not just cognitive reframes.
  • Emotional fluidity — the harder step of welcoming and allowing emotions to move through the body rather than managing them at arm's length.

Participants are encouraged to experiment like "scientists of their own experience," testing what makes them feel more present rather than more numb. Practices include targeted exercises for locating where emotions settle in the body and real‑world "edge challenges" — intentionally staying with an emotion in a difficult situation to practise letting it pass.

The offering

Nervous System Mastery runs as a five‑week live bootcamp (a cohort) from 5 October to 6 November, combining about 45 minutes of weekly pre‑recorded audio and workbook work with a live session each week. Extras include small‑group practice and guest masterclasses on themes such as sleep, ADHD and public speaking.

Enrolment closes on 25 September. More information and applications are available at nsmastery.com. Use code BOOM250 for $250 off enrolment.
